Pack for the first 24 hours first. If you can enter, pay, get online, reach your hotel, take needed medicine, and charge your phone, the rest of the trip becomes much easier to solve.
A China packing list should not be a giant suitcase inventory. The real question is: what would be painful to lose, forget, or keep buried at the wrong moment? That means your carry-on matters more than your checked bag.
Documents and identity
Keep the documents you need for travel, hotel check-in, rail, and recovery in one simple system. Do not scatter them across email, screenshots, and luggage pockets without a plan.
- Passport, with copies stored separately.
- Visa, visa-free confirmation, or entry documents if applicable.
- Flight and hotel confirmations.
- Hotel name, address, and phone number in Chinese and English.
- Travel insurance details, if you use insurance.
- Emergency contact and embassy or consulate information.
Anything you need before reaching your first hotel belongs in your carry-on: passport, payment backup, phone charger, medicine, hotel address, and first-day transport plan.
Payment and money backup
Do not pack money as if every payment will work perfectly. Mobile payment is common, but visitors should still prepare fallback options. Think in layers: phone wallet, physical card, and a small amount of cash if available.
| Item | Pack or prepare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Phone wallet | Alipay or WeChat Pay setup before departure | Daily purchases often depend on QR payment habits. |
| Card | At least one physical bank card | Useful for hotels, backup payment, or cash access. |
| Cash | Small emergency reserve | Helpful when apps, data, or verification are not cooperating. |
Phone, power, and internet
Your phone is your map, translator, payment tool, hotel folder, rail helper, and emergency device. Pack around that reality.
- Unlocked phone if you plan to use local SIM or certain eSIM options.
- Charging cable and compact power bank.
- Plug adapter if your charger does not match local outlets.
- eSIM, roaming, or local SIM plan chosen before arrival.
- Offline screenshots of hotel, address, first route, and key bookings.
Medicine and health basics
Bring personal medication in original packaging when possible, plus a simple written note of what it is. Do not rely on finding the exact same brand after landing. For anything controlled or unusual, check official guidance before travel.
Rail-day packing
If your route includes high-speed rail, pack your station day like an airport day. You may need passport access, booking details, battery, water, and patience for large station layouts.
Passport, booking details, phone, charger, water, snack, and hotel address for the arrival city.
Oversized bags, buried documents, and a tight schedule immediately after arrival.
What not to overpack
Most big Chinese cities have easy access to daily basics, clothing, toiletries, umbrellas, snacks, and chargers. Overpacking can make station transfers and hotel changes more annoying than the missing item would have been.
- Do not bring too many "just in case" clothes if you plan to move cities.
- Do not pack large toiletries unless you need a specific product.
- Do not carry paper copies of everything if they become messy; keep a small clean document set.
